‘Outlander’ Producers Reveal The ‘Worst Outlander Ending’ They Wish They Had Filmed
Frankly, it's worse than 'Game of Thrones.'
When it comes to ending long-running shows, that are based on a popular book series, there’s a lot of pressure on the creators of the show. Outlander is no exception. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series, it’s due to end its decade long run, after 8 seasons and 101 episodes of television. Starring Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan as star-crossed, time-challenged soulmates Claire and Jamie Fraser, the anticipation for the Outlander finale is building. At the Outlander premiere in NYC, Maril Davis and Matthew B. Roberts revealed what the worst ending would be for their show. And it’s kind of amazingly bad, worse than we ever could imagine.
Now, when you think of terrible television show endings, the first that comes to mind is probably Game of Thrones. The next is How I Met Your Mother. As long as Outlander steers clear of those two types of endings, and keeps Jamie and Claire together until the very end, they’ll be just fine.
“Jamie and Claire go to Hawaii,” is what Maril Davis said they always wanted to do. But mainly because it sounds like they all wanted to film in Hawaii. Channeling Bobby Ewing in the Dallas finale, they decided the worst Outlander ending would be if Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), Claire’s first husband, woke up in the shower and the whole show was a dream! “I don’t think you can beat Frank waking up in the shower… and I’m really bummed that we didn’t film that!” Roberts lamented.
Imagine a world in which Frank takes a shower, and we learn that Claire and Jamie were just in his dream (or nightmare). So rude. Actually wait, Jamie Fraser not existing, that is Frank’s dream.
Gabaldon revealed that she had seen the television finale and that she was happy with it, but pointed out her book finale, which she is still working on, would be better. “Well of course she did! But she also gets to end it where the books end and we didn’t,” Davis points out. Roberts adds, “She gets to tell all that story in between.”
The Outlander series finale will air on Friday, May 15 at midnight on Starz.
